Seedance 2.0 Video Editing & Element Swap

Seedance 2.0's reference system enables a form of video editing where you can swap characters, change costumes, alter environments, or add/remove objects in existing footage. By combining a @video reference for the base motion and timing with @image references for the new elements, you can restructure a video's content while preserving its camera work and pacing.

Character swap fundamentals

To replace a character in an existing video, attach the original clip as a @video reference and the new character's reference image as an @image reference. Describe the swap explicitly: 'replace the original character with the person from the reference image, maintain all original motion, timing, and camera angles.' The model preserves the movement choreography while changing the character's appearance.

Costume and appearance changes

For changing a character's outfit or appearance without changing identity, attach the original video and a reference image of the desired costume. Describe what changes and what stays the same: 'same character and motion, but wearing the red dress from reference image instead of the blue jacket.' Keep descriptions specific about which elements change and which must remain identical.

Environment and background swaps

Replace the environment while keeping foreground action intact. Attach the original video for motion reference and an @image of the new background. Describe the swap: 'same character actions and camera movement, but set in a snow-covered mountain landscape instead of the urban street.' Maintain lighting direction consistency with the new environment.

Adding and removing elements

To add an object, describe it naturally in the scene and provide an @image reference for its appearance. To remove an element, describe the scene as it should appear without it: 'same scene but the table in the foreground is removed, background fills naturally.' Simpler removals work better than complex ones.

Character swap in a dance sequence

Replaces the dancer in an existing clip with a new character while preserving all choreography.

@video[original-dance.mp4] @image[new-dancer.png] Replace the dancer in the reference video with the character from the reference image, preserve all dance choreography and timing exactly, same camera angles and movements, new character wears a flowing white dress, same studio lighting setup, smooth and natural motion transfer, no flickering or identity drift.
The exact dance sequence from the original video but performed by the new character, with identical timing, camera work, and studio lighting.

Environment swap for a walking shot

Keeps the character's walking motion but moves them from a city street to a beach setting.

@video[city-walk.mp4] @image[beach-sunset.jpg] Same character and walking motion from reference video, but replace the city street environment with a sunset beach from the reference image, character walks along the shoreline with gentle waves nearby, warm golden sunset lighting replacing urban daylight, maintain original walking pace and camera tracking distance, sand texture underfoot, ocean in background.
The original walking motion and character preserved exactly, but set on a sunset beach with appropriate lighting, waves, and sand instead of the city street.

Object addition to an existing scene

Adds a floating holographic display to an existing office scene.

@video[office-scene.mp4] @image[hologram-display.png] Same office scene and character actions from reference video, add a floating holographic display from reference image hovering above the desk, hologram emits soft blue light that subtly illuminates the character's face, holographic content slowly rotates, character occasionally glances at the display, maintain all original scene elements and camera movement.
The original office scene with an added holographic display that integrates naturally with the existing lighting, while all original elements and motion remain unchanged.

자주 묻는 질문

How well does character swap preserve the original choreography?

Simple motions like walking, sitting, and gesturing swap with high fidelity. Complex choreography like fast dance moves may need per-segment generation to maintain accuracy. Start with shorter clips and chain results for longer sequences.

Can I swap multiple elements simultaneously?

Yes, but limit to two swaps per generation for best quality. For example, swap the character and the background together. Avoid swapping character, background, and adding objects all in one pass as this increases the chance of artifacts.

What if the swapped character has a very different body type?

The model adjusts motion to fit the new character's proportions, but extreme differences may cause unnatural movement. For best results, choose replacement characters with roughly similar build and height to the original.
